Well, if it's the weekend, it must mean rain.

After last Saturday's and then Monday's rainfall, today's outlook also calls for more precipitation, but it should shape up in time for Memorial Day.

According to the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks, much of the region will see a chance of heavy rain and severe weather today and tonight, though the biggest threat will be over the Devils Lake basin into the northern Red River Valley.

Flood warnings exist for the Red River in Polk, Grand Forks and Walsh counties, the Red Lake River in Polk County and the Two Rivers River in Kittson County, the weather service said. The warning also has been extended for the Buffalo River near Hawley, Minn.

As of Friday evening, the Red River in Grand Forks was at 30.33 feet and was expected to crest sometime tonight at about 33 feet. Flood stage is 28 feet, and much of the lower areas of the Greenway in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks remain closed because of high water.

On Friday, the day started out just fine, "mostly sunny," in fact, as the weather service said. But the noon hour brought some hard rain to accompany the wind in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. And the sun wasn't much of a presence until later in the afternoon.

According to the Grand Forks area forecast, there's a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms before 1 p.m. today, but the real odds of thunderstorms will be tonight, when there's a 60 percent chance of rain.

Here's the rest of the local forecast:

- Sunday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 70. Breezy, with a west northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

- Memorial Day (Monday): Partly sunny, with a high near 67.
