WEATHER: Less turbulent weather ahead after overnight rumble

Polk, Mahnomen, Norman, Clearwater and Beltrami counties in northwest Minnesota and Traill, Steele, Griggs and Foster counties in eastern North Dakota are among those in a severe thunderstorm watch this morning until 9 a.m.

Polk, Mahnomen, Norman, Clearwater and Beltrami counties in northwest Minnesota and Traill, Steele, Griggs and Foster counties in eastern North Dakota are among those in a severe thunderstorm watch this morning until 9 a.m.

Most of of the southern Red River Valley also is in a thunderstorm watch, including Cass and Clay counties.

Severe thunderstorm warnings in effect included the Fergus Falls, Minn., area as of 6:45 a.m.

A tornado touchdown was reported by law enforcement north of West Fargo, N.D., and Reile's Acres about 1:35 a.m., while a weather spotter viewed multiple funnel clouds north of West Fargo.

Earlier, a tornado was reported by the public five miles west of Maddock, N.D., in Benson County.

A wind gust of 72 mph was reported three miles south of Fargo at University and 32nd Avenue South about 1:40 a.m., while another gust estimated at 65 mph was reported at Casselton, N.D., in Cass County at 4:54 a.m. by the broadcast media, according to the weather service website.

Thunderstorm winds knocked down several trees in a farmyard about eight miles northwest of Greenbush, Minn., in Roseau County late Monday night, according to law enforcement.

A 62-mph wind gust was recorded at Hallock, Minn., in Kittson County at 11:14 p.m. Monday. Hallock reported .65 of rain.

Gusts of 70-80 miles an hour uprooted 2-foot diameter trees near Munich, N.D., and 1.11 inches of rain fell in three hours northeast of Drake, N.D. in Pierce County.

The National Weather Service office in Grand Forks reported .56 ending at 7 a.m. Tuesday while Grand Forks International Airport reported .36. Devils Lake airport received .80.

The National Weather Service forecast for Grand Forks:

Today: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 7 a.m. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. South southwest wind 7 to 14 mph becoming north northwest. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 56. Northwest wind between 10 and 13 mph.
