WEATHER: 9 below, plus coming light snow

Now this is more like the kind of winter we know and, uh, let's just leave it at that.

Quite a difference from the 40s a few days ago, isn't it?

If you prefer your Januarys to be more on the atypically warm, all is not lost. Grand Forks' expected high Saturday is in the 20s and Sunday in the low 30s. Today, though, the temperature is not expected to climb much beyond 13 degrees.

And Tuesday's expected high is zero.

If you prefer a little more snow cover, that's coming much sooner.

Expect areas of light snow to move into northeast North Dakota late this afternoon, spreading south and east overnight, the National Weather Service says.

Saturday, the light snow will continue, mainly along and east of the Red River Valley, ending by evening, the weather service says.

Don't be surprised to see 1 to 2 inches of new snow by the time it ends, according to the weather service.

The extended National Weather Service forecast for Grand Forks:

Today: A 20 percent chance of snow after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 13. Southwest wind between 3 and 9 mph.

Tonight: Snow likely, mainly after midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 9. South wind 7 to 11 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of snow before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. Northwest wind between 7 and 14 mph.

Saturday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11. North northwest wind between 5 and 8 mph.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 31. Southeast wind 8 to 15 mph becoming west southwest. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

Sunday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 10.

Monday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -6.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 0.

Tuesday night: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around -8.
