MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- A Waubun woman has been arrested on three counts of abuse against a 16-month-old child.

Arlene Duncan, 44, faces one count of first-degree assault and two counts of malicious punishment of a child in Mahnomen County District Court.

The Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office responded Feb. 11 to a Waubun residence after a call requesting an ambulance for a toddler in medical distress, according to a news release from Mahnomen County Sheriff Doug Krier.

The child was taken to Mahnomen Health Center and later transferred to Sanford Health in Fargo. The hospital suspected child abuse and contacted authorities, who determined abuse had occurred.
