CROOKSTON -- School's start might be delayed for some Crookston students.

Superintendent Wayne Gilman said high school classes may not begin until Friday because of a water break discovered Monday morning in its building. The school system's other buildings will start as scheduled Thursday.

"We probably won't know until Wednesday afternoon if we'll have high school classes Thursday," Gilman said. "It's beyond me to know how long it will take for carpet to dry."

After using fans and dehumidifiers to dry the building, molding and wallpaper will be applied and steam-cleaners will be employed. The waterline break turned portions of the high school into a muddy swamp.

Although most Minnesota schools returned to classes Tuesday, Crookston is using the first two days after Labor Day for conferences involving students, parents and teachers. The conferences involving high school students have been moved to Highland School.

Cause of the break is unknown. Between the broken line and recent heavy rains, the area is a "muddy mess," Gilman said.

The school has a temporary water supply from a fire hydrant.
