WABASHA, Minn. -- The city of Wabasha has put the brakes on any new or expanded frack sand operations.

The City Council voted Tuesday night to impose two moratoriums, as recommended by Wabasha's planning commission, because of concerns about increasing heavy truck traffic. Two frack sand operations already established in the city truck sand through the community's west side to a rail loading facility.

Winona Daily News says the first moratorium halts new frack sand operations and the second limits a company to 30 heavy truck trips a day on the city's west side.

Meanwhile, Houston County's frack sand moratorium has been extended another year. County commissioners voted unanimously for the extension Tuesday to allow more time to study issues related to the industry.
