BISMARCK – Voting in North Dakota’s June 14 primary election is already underway for military and overseas voters, with nearly 270 having requested ballots and 47 having cast ballots as of Monday, Secretary of State Al Jaeger said.
Ballots were distributed last Friday to voters in more than 30 countries under state law and the federal Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act, Jaeger reported.
Absentee ballots are made available to military voters and their families stationed away from their North Dakota residence, and to residents living overseas, on the 46th day before the primary.
For all other North Dakota voters, absentee ballots will be available May 5, the 40th day before the primary, which this year features a hotly contested three-way race for the Republican Party’s nomination for governor.
While voters are casting ballots now, their votes won’t be counted until June 14. County auditors transfer each marked ballot in a secrecy envelope to the election board to be counted on election day, Jaeger said.
