UND has postponed Wednesday's planned dedication of a 1,500-pound pedestal and bronze bust of George Walsh because of severe weather.
UND officials sent out a press release this morning saying that the dedication has been postponed because of a winter storm that is forecast to hit the region on Wednesday. The dedication will be rescheduled for a later date.
Walsh is credited with writing the legislation to place UND in Grand Forks, six years before North Dakota even became a state.
Walsh also was editor and owner of the Plaindealer, the first newspaper in the Red River Valley, which was later bought out by the Grand Forks Herald. He went on to be a land developer. Walsh County is named in his honor, as is a UND student dorm.
The idea for the bust evolved through the 125th Anniversary Historic Preservation Committee, a group formed as part of UND's recent 125th anniversary celebration.
