UPDATE: East Grand Forks substation explosion leads to power outages

As much as half the city of East Grand Forks was without power after the explosion.

UPDATE: East Grand Forks Water and Light reported all power had been restored shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday morning.

Individual customers still experiencing power outages should call 218-773-0515.

EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. — As much as half of the city was without power after a substation explosion Thursday night.


East Grand Forks Water and Light reported the outage around 10 p.m. and police officials said the outage could last for hours.

East Grand Forks Police were also warning residents about stoplights being impacted by the outage.

Several WDAY viewers sent in videos of the strange light in the sky east of town off of Highway 2.

The outage also forced an early end to Thursday night's boys hockey game between the Green Wave and the Grand Forks Central Knights.

No word yet on what caused the outage.
