BISMARCK -- Bismarck car crash survivor and UND student Shayna Monson, who suffered severe head trauma in June, was admitted to Kindred Hospital Denver in Denver, Colo on Thursday for therapy and rehabilitation.

"I'm confident we are in the right place," wrote Connie Monson, Shayna's mother, on the website CaringBridge where she announced the transfer. "The staff here are very knowledgeable and experienced, so I'm hoping and praying for great things to come."

Shayna Monson is improving, according to posts written by Connie Monson and her ex-husband, Harlan Monson, on the webpage, but she still has a long way to go.

Connie Monson wrote that the doctor said her daughter's brain is in the "waking-up stage" and she requires speech, occupational, and physical therapies.

Harlan Monson, posted that she will have to be retaught how to do things, including walking.

"Everything we take for granted, she will have to learn all over again," he wrote.

Shayna Monson, 21, of Dickinson, experienced major head trauma in a head-on collision June 27 that killed her friends Taylor Goven, 21, of Mandan, and Abby Renschler, 22, of Lincoln.

Shayna Monson and Goven, were roommates, according to the CaringBridge site.

A vehicle driven by Jordan Ray Morsette, 28, of Bismarck, collided with Shayna Monson's vehicle on Bismarck Expressway near McKenzie Drive, killing the other women and leaving Shayna Monson in critical condition.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol reported finding alcoholic beverages in Morsette's vehicle after the accident, and Morsette allegedly had a strong odor of alcohol and bloodshot eyes. He was charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and one count of criminal vehicular injury.
