A UND professor charged with assaulting one nurse and threatening another has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.

If a judge accepts the agreement, Daniel Erickson would be sentenced to 60 days in jail and 18 months of supervision.

Erickson, who is no longer in custody, already served more than a month in jail during the summer.

The plea agreement, filed in court today, allows Erickson to receive credit for any time served in an inpatient mental-health treatment program and requires him to complete psychological and chemical-dependency evaluations and follow any recommendations.

Erickson, 52, was accused of grabbing a nurse's hair and yanking her around on July 16 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks where he was receiving psychiatric care.

The nurse was treated in the hospital's emergency room for a cut lip, bleeding from her ear and other head injuries, authorities said.

It was also alleged that Erickson threatened another nurse with a telephone receiver during the same incident. He was charged with two misdemeanors -- assault and menacing.

He is set to be sentenced Nov. 2.

Today, UND spokesman Peter Johnson said Erickson's employment status has not changed since the incident. For now, a substitute has taken over Erickson's classes, and once Erickson is sentenced, university officials will review the situation, Johnson said.

Erickson has been on UND's faculty for more than 10 years. He teaches courses on Latin and Greek languages and literature.
