One semi-finalist has dropped out of the running to become UND's next president.

UND Presidential Search Committee Co-chairman Hesham El-Rewini said Daniel L. Clay, the dean of the College of Education at the University of Missouri, accepted a position elsewhere. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reported Monday Clay was hired to be the dean of the College of Education at the University of Iowa.

"The reason we had seven finalists visit campus is to allow room for this kind of thing to happen," El-Rewini said. "This position attracts good people, and other places might also be interested in them."

The remaining six candidates have committed to four-day on-campus interviews.

Former North Dakota Gov. Ed Schafer is currently serving as interim president at UND. In March, the search committee plans to recommend a narrowed pool of applicants to the State Board of Higher Education, which has final hiring authority.
