A UND employee is in serious condition after being hit by a car while walking across a campus street Wednesday morning, UND officials reported.
UND Police Chief Duane Czapiewski said Loran Carl, 73, was walking south across Campus Road from an employee parking lot when he was struck about 8 a.m. by a 1995 Nissan car driven by 22-year-old UND student Josiah Nordmark.
Carl, who works in the Facilities Building's carpet shop, was taken by ambulance to Altru Hospital. A nursing supervisor said Carl remained in serious condition in the intensive care unit Wednesday night.
UND President Robert Kelley e-mailed students and university staff Wednesday afternoon to inform them of the accident.
"Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to Loran and his family as we hope for the best," he wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers also go out to the UND student who was driving the car."

Campus Road has a speed limit of 25 mph, Czapiewski said, but speed did not seem to be a factor in the crash. He said Nordmark was traveling east into the sun at the time of the accident and has not yet been cited with any traffic violations.
The crash is still under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call the UND Police Department at (701) 777-3491.
