JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- Two men from Cosby in northwestern North Dakota have been identified as the drowning victims in canoe accident early Monday on Spiritwood Lake.

Rescue crews recovered the bodies of Alonso Martinez, 25, and Damian Calzadias, 24, at the lake Monday, the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office reported. Blake Roberts, 32, of Big Sky, Mont., also was in the canoe when it tipped in the middle of the lake but was able to swim to shore.

Two life jackets were recovered at the scene, but none of the victims was wearing a life jacket, authorities said. The bodies were recovered in water that was 40 feet deep, and authorities believe alcohol was a factor.

Spiritwood Lake is about 15 miles northeast of Jamestown.
