CORNUCOPIA, Wis. -- A driver for the local ambulance service and his mother were killed in a house fire early Friday near Cornucopia, Wis., the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office reported.

Dennis Swenson, 62, and his 95-year-old mother, Dorothy Swenson, died in the fire at their home in the town of Bell a few miles east of Cornucopia, which is on the shores of Lake Superior in far northern Wisconsin. A dog also died in the fire.

No one else lived in the home, said Dan Clark, chief deputy for the sheriff's office.

The fire was reported about 4:15 a.m. and the old, two-story farmhouse was in flames by the time firefighters arrived, Clark said. The house was destroyed, Clark said. No dollar value was placed on the loss.

Dennis Swenson was well-known in the area because of his work for the ambulance service, Clark said

He was single, had lived with his mother all of his life and had been managing her daily  affairs, Clark said. But Dorothy Swenson wasn't bedridden, he added.
