WAHPETON, N.D. - A trial date is set for a Wahpeton man charged with attempted murder after a head-on crash Sept. 12.

Charles Mikkelson's three-day jury trial is scheduled to begin March 14 before Judge Daniel Narum in Richland County District Court.

Mikkelson is currently out of jail after posting a $100,000 surety on Oct. 27 following a preliminary hearing in which the judge lowered the bail amount.

According to the charging document and the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Mikkelson, 70, was driving his 2008 Chevy Silverado pickup on Highway 127 south of Wahpeton when he crossed the centerline, hitting a 2009 Ford Escape SUV driven by 62-year-old Kathleen Lureen of Wahpeton.

Lureen and Mikkelson had a relationship prior to the incident, the patrol said.
