Hold on to your hat today, if you choose to try to wear one.

Windy conditions will occur over much of the Red River region through the afternoon hours, with gusts up to 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks.

A wind advisory remains in effect until 7 tonight for all of the Red River region.

Southwest winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph "can be expected," the weather service said in a statement. It's caused by a strong low pressure system that will hover over southern Manitoba, according to forecasters.

The winds are expected to gradually weaken during the afternoon hours in the northern reaches of the region.

The weather service cautioned at waves of three to five feet might stir up water in the Devils Lake basin and threaten some erosion of roadbeds in susceptible areas.

The winds are expected to be stronger in western and south-central North Dakota today, with gusts reaching 60 mph at times, the weather service says. A high wind warning is out for that part of North Dakota.

Strong winds can make driving difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles, so caution is advised while traveling.
