UND's John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences has another casual link to McCain: Ret. Rear Admiral Robert Shumaker, who spent eight years in the same POW camp in Hanoi as McCain, was associate dean of the school from January, 1989 until July, 1991.
McCain came to UND because of Shumaker in 1990 and went on the school's annual summer fishing trip to Canada. In the school's display case is a photo of McCain and Odegard together at the lake, each holding a fish. McCain's was bigger.
Shumaker was one of nine former POWs who signed a statement in March marking the 35th anniversary of McCain's release from "Hanoi Hilton" and endorsing his bid for the presidency.
