Three-day Wacipi powwow set for Friday through Sunday at UND's Time Out Week celebration

With the Time Out Week celebration of Indian culture and heritage at UND already under way, the annual three-day Wacipi powwow is set to begin Friday night and run through Sunday at UND Hyslop Sports Center.

With the Time Out Week celebration of Indian culture and heritage at UND already under way, the annual three-day Wacipi powwow is set to begin Friday night and run through Sunday at UND Hyslop Sports Center.

The concluding event of Time Out week, the powwow will begin with grand entry at 7 p.m. Friday. Saturday's grand entries will be at 1 and 7 p.m. with the traditional feast at 5 p.m. The powwow will end Sunday; grand entry will be at 1 p.m.

The Wacipi weekend draws competitive dancers, singers and drummers from tribes from North Dakota, Minnesota and the greater United States and Canada, a news release from UND said. The Wacipi will include a basketball tournament.

Admission to the powwow is free for children under age 5, senior citizens, and UND students. For others, wristbands are $6 daily or $10 for a weekend pass. Here's information about the powwow:

Friday, grand entry, 7 p.m.: Special guests will include UND first lady Marcia Kelley and the 2012 recipients of the More Than Beads and Feathers awards, which honors outstanding American Indian graduates of UND: Elsie Morningstar, Cheryl Kary, Biron Baker, Francine McDonald, Duane Gourneau, Jason Hrdlicka, Joseph Morsette, Kimberly Rhoades and Daniel Fluke. There will be intertribal singing and dancing, a tiny tots exhibition, golden age, junior, teen and adult contest categories for dance and more.

Saturday, grand entry, 1 p.m: Phyllis Johnson, UND vice president for research and economic development, will be the special guest. There will be intertribal singing and dance, an adult and golden age dancing exhibition, a Blanket Dance fundraiser for the children of the late Nicolette Wolf Leader, a women's fancy shawl dance by head woman dancer Windspirit Spotted Bear, a tiny tots exhibition, junior and teen contest categories and more.

Saturday, traditional feast, 5 p.m.: Stew, dinner roll, cookies, coffee and lemonade. Free to all attending the powwow.

Saturday, grand entry, 7 p.m.: Special guest will be UND Student Body President Kylie Oversen. There will be intertribal singing and dancing, a tiny tots exhibition and junior and teen exhibition dances, a women's fancy shawl dance by Brittany Crawford, golden age and adult contest categories and more.

Sunday, grand entry, 1 p.m.: There will intertribal singing and dancing, a give-away, a tiny tots exhibition and golden age, junior, teen and adult dance contest categories, a couples dance, announcement of winners and more.
