Third Street Clinic patients may now fill prescriptions at the Altru Hospital retail pharmacy.

The pharmacy at the Grand Forks hospital began accepting clinic vouchers on Monday. Third Street Clinic patients already had access to the pharmacies at Altru's main clinic, family medicine center and family medicine residency facilities in Grand Forks.

"Pharmacy care is an essential service that we provide for our clients," Corey Mock, executive director of the Third Street Clinic, wrote in a prepared statement. "We are pleased to welcome Altru Retail Pharmacy to our family of providers that make exceptional health care available to our low-income and uninsured neighbors."

The Third Street Clinic is a private, non-profit organization funded through donations, grants and in-kind contributions. More than 100 medical professionals volunteer their time to the clinic, the only organization of its kind in the nation. The clinic was founded in 1989 by Dr. Timothy Hockenberry to help uninsured, low-income area residents.

The clinic has provided medical services to more than 3,000 residents of the upper Red River Valley since its founding. Some 1,500 prescriptions per year are filled through its efforts. It works with Altru, independent pharmacies, the Valley Vision Clinic and local dentists to provide services.

Other pharmacies that accept Third Street Clinic vouchers are Walls's Pharmacy, Skip's Budget Drug, Thrifty White Drug, the Hugo's pharmacy in East Grand Forks and Medicap Pharmacy.
