A train derailed near Heimdal, N.D., and caught fire Wednesday , prompting the evacuation of about 25 people and two farmsteads. The incident brought attention back to the lack of Minnesota rail safety legislation .

The News

  1. The UND nickname committee has eliminated 462 nickname suggestions of the 500 its members examined Wednesday. That leaves 672 of the original 1,172 nicknames suggested by the public for the committee to go through, likely at the group's May 18 meeting.
  2. UND student Alex Davis died after a fentanyl overdose in April, police said. The UND Police Department is leading the investigation of Davis' death.
  3. F ormer UND secretary Lori Ann Pesch is facing felony theft charges for allegedly falsifying travel vouchers for which she was reimbursed about $47,500.
  4. Brandon Sloan, the Red River High School strength coach whose students rallied around him after he learned his contract with the school would not be renewed for next year, will remain at the school . The school has opted to give him a different position.

NDSU students aren't very impressed with the long list of UND nickname suggestions from the public that mocked the bison. Meanwhile, UND students themselves had mixed reactions to the possible nicknames.
