Based on the true story of a man trapped inside a hideously deformed body, the play reveals the social outcast to have a far richer inner spirit than the hypocritical 1890s Victorian middle class that surrounds him.
"The Elephant Man" was first produced in London in 1979 at the Hampstead Theatre and soon moved to New York, opening Off-Broadway at the Theatre of St. Peter's Church, and then to Broadway and the Booth Theatre through 1981. The lead role was played by David Bowie from July 29, 1980 to January 3, 1981. Pomerance's play earned many positive reviews and in 1980 was turned into an even more successful Hollywood film, of the same name, directed by David Lynch (Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks).
