A teen driver was injured in what appears to be a violent drunken driving accident Tuesday near Hannaford, the Griggs County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday.

The 17-year-old had to be airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Fargo

It happened around 6:10 p.m. about a mile north of town on North Dakota Highway 1. The driver lost control of her vehicle on a curve on top of a hill, causing the vehicle to slide into a ditch and cartwheel over a hay bale, the department said.

She was able to get out and flag down other drivers, one of whom called 911. The vehicle was a total loss.

The accident remains under investigation, but the sheriff's department said possible charges are pending.
