The Red River Valley could see its taste of winter.

The National Weather Service in Grand Forks said a large storm system is developing off the coast of Washington and heading in the general direction of the valley.

Rain will become likely in all areas Monday, and continue through Wednesday, with high winds developing Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather service said Saturday night.

The exact track of this storm is still uncertain, but it appears that most areas should receive at least 1 inch of rain with locally higher amounts possible, said the weather service.

Snow is not out of the question.

Colder air will filter into the area Tuesday night and Wednesday, and rain may mix with or change to snow by Wednesday night.

Winds also will increase Tuesday, and may gust to 50 mph at times by Wednesday throughout the region.

"It's a very vigorous system, and it looks like there will be precipitation over most of the area," Meteorologist Jennifer Ritterling said, adding that it is too early to predict the path.

The weather service forecast calls for highs in the mid-50s today and Monday, with a chance of rain developing after midnight tonight. The probability of rain increases to 60 percent Monday.

The cooler weather likely will mean daily high temperatures from 40 to 50 and lows in the mid-20s to 30 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
