A standoff at a motel on St. Cloud's East Side ended safely tonight after police coaxed a man out of a room there.

Street barricades on Lincoln Avenue near the Gateway Motel were lifted shortly after 9 p.m.

Sgt. Rich Wilson of the St. Cloud Police Department said a suicidal man at the motel eventually came out. He did not make any threats toward anyone outside the room. When he was coming out of the room, he did not obey officers' orders. Officers used "less than lethal force" to subdue him and then took him to a hospital.

Wilson said earlier in the evening that the situation did not pose danger to the public. Some traffic was affected.

The Gateway Motel is at 310 Lincoln Ave. SE.
