The forecast for moderate to major spring flooding in the Red River Basin is fairly unlikely, according to a probability outlook issued this week by the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks.
In fact, most areas have less than a 10 percent chance of moderate to major spring flooding. A probability outlook released Wednesday said there is a 10 percent chance that Devils Lake could exceed last year's record high level of 1,449.2 feet set May 9.
"As we know, it's not over, until it's over," said Bill Barrett, a meteorologist with the weather service in Grand Forks. "Any snow or rain precipitation combination at the wrong time could completely change things."
Forecasts for the next two weeks show conditions should be dry and cold with a few small precipitation events, he said. Areas around Grand Forks have about a 20 percent chance of agricultural flooding, but there is a less than 10 percent chance for major flooding.
The Two Rivers near Hallock, Minn., has a 26 percent chance of moderate flooding with water levels exceeding 806 feet. The Park River in Grafton, N.D., has a 14 percent chance of moderate flooding where water levels could exceed 14.3 feet.
