Spirit Lake Indian Reservation and Stark County will receive a $900,000 boost in federal funding to provide affordable and adequate housing for Native American families and veterans.

U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp released the announcement Friday.

Specifically, $900,000 will be given to Spirit Lake Indian Reservation to provide adequate housing, suitable living conditions and support economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income Native Americans. Stark County Housing Authority will receive nearly $23,000 to provide homeless veterans and their families with affordable housing vouchers.

“As North Dakota grows, housing prices are skyrocketing and families are having a hard time finding affordable places to live,” said Heitkamp. “That’s why I’ve been working to make sure we tackle North Dakota’s housing challenges head on and seek to find more affordable options for families. No parent should have to choose between paying their rent or taking their kids to the doctor. These funds will help make sure veterans, who have courageously served our country, and Native Americans are able to find a place to call home.”
