Spalon Tamaagi closes its downtown GF doors

Spalon Tamaagi closed its doors Wednesday after more than four years in the downtown Grand Forks area, the salon and day spa's owner told the Herald.

Spalon Tamaagi closed its doors Wednesday after more than four years in the downtown Grand Forks area, the salon and day spa's owner told the Herald.

Angie Narlock said the decision to close her business at 311 S. Fourth St. was something she thought about for a while.

"But I've just been determined to do everything I can along with my father to make it work and keep the doors open," she said. "Unfortunately, we just kind of ran out of time."

The initial cost of starting up the full-service salon and day spa business, which opened May 1, 2006, ended up being too high.

"You have that debt to pay and then when the economy hit, that's really when we took a dive," Narlock said.

Her business was seeing "quite a few customers" even after the recession, but clients waited longer between visits to cut down on expenses -- and the customers also tended to spend less with each visit.

She made the final decision to close June 18 and told her 14 full-time employees a few days later.

Narlock said she plans to rent a booth at Pure Image, a salon near the Ralph Engelstad Arena, by the middle of July. And several of her former employers plan to rent booths at area salons, she said.

Narlock grew up in Oslo, Minn., and has lived in Grand Forks for almost 20 years.

Former customers who have nonexpired gift certificates for Spalon Tamaagi are asked to call Narlock at (701) 317-2811 to schedule redeeming the certificates at her new booth.
