The Red River Valley should see its first measurable snow this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say up to 6 inches of snow could accumulate in western and central North Dakota today into the evening, while the Red River Valley could see up to 5 inches in some places, the weather service said.
According to the weather service's website, a hazardous weather outlook shows up to 3 to 5 inches of snow is forecast north of U.S. Highway 2 in northeastern North Dakota into northwest Minnesota. The snow is expected to move into the area this afternoon into
Sunday.
South of Grand Forks, up to 3 inches is expected to fall on a line from Valley City through Fargo into the Detroit Lakes, Minn., area, the weather service said.

Colder weather also is a part of the system, with low temperatures possibly dropping below zero in northern areas.
Here's a look at the Grand Forks-area forecast from the weather service:
- Today: A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly after 3 pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 18. Northeast wind between 6 and 10 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
- Tonight: Snow. Low around 14. East wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
- Sunday: Snow, mainly before noon. High near 25. North northwest wind between 3 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. A 20 percent chance of snow before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 12. Northwest wind between 8 and 10 mph.
- Monday: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 18. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 2 on Monday night.
- Tuesday: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 13. Low will drop to 2 below zero at night.
- Wednesday: A slight chance of snow. Partly sunny, with a high near 9, with temperatures falling to 3 below at night.
