The UND women's hockey team is off to the best start in school history. To that, the Sioux can, in large part, thank their goaltenders.

That's right, Brittany Kirkham has some help this season.

The duo of Kirkham and freshman Stephanie Ney was key in UND's sweep of St. Cloud State last weekend in Ralph Engelstad Arena and UND expects them to continue to split time.

Kirkham, a junior, stopped 32 of 33 shots in Friday's 2-1 Sioux win -- an effort that earned her Western Collegiate Hockey Association player of the week honors. The next night, Ney stopped 38 of 40 shots in UND's 3-2 win.

"We're excited about it," UND coach Brian Idalski said. "The thing we're most excited for is when we get to the stretch run late in the season and into the playoffs, Brit is going to be fresh. That's something she's never had the opportunity to do."
