George Sinner, the Democrat challenger to U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer in this year’s election, outlined an initiative to address domestic violence in Grand Forks Thursday.

In a press conference at the Grand Forks Public Library, Sinner introduced his “What Happens Next” initiative. That plan would include studying consolidation of services and improving the programs that work.

“Basically what’s happening today is that our federal government is providing grants through all sorts of different channels to try to address these different issues,” Sinner said. “We need to pull these programs together and create some efficiencies.”

He advocated for providing “more federal assistance to both non-governmental and governmental agencies.”

About 173 victims of domestic violence used shelters or transitional housing from local domestic violence programs in North Dakota in 2013, according to the National Network to End Domestic Violence. That same report said 21 percent of organizations saw reduced government funding.
