Grant Shaft, a Grand Forks attorney, has been reappointed to the State Board of Higher Education for a second four-year term, according to the governor's office.

The governor also appointed a new board member, Terry Hjelmstad, a retired Minot edu-cator, who replaces Jon Backes, a Minot attorney.

Backes is president of the board this school year, but will step down at the end of the year.

Shafts' and Hjelmstad's terms begin July 1.

Shaft served in the state House of Representatives from 1986 to 1990.

Hjelmstad has served in a variety of roles in the Minot and Stanley, N.D., public school sys-tems, from teacher to assistant principal to athletic director.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple said in a statement that Hjelmstad's experience with career planning and technical education will be an asset to the board.

The nine-member board sets policies for the North Dakota University System and consists of seven regular members, one student member and one faculty advisor. The governor appoints them from a list submitted by various interests, including the North Dakota Education Association and the chief justice of the state Supreme Court.
