The Red River Valley is forecast to see severe thunderstorms mixed with sweltering heat this afternoon and evening.

A heat index of nearly 100 degrees will hit the cities of Grand Forks and Crookston, with surrounding areas, including Grafton and Devils Lake, seeing a heat index of 91 degrees.

Mayville, N.D., has the highest heat index forecast in the region at 101 degrees.

Along with the heat, this afternoon will bring a severe storm potential spanning the region from Devils Lake to Bemidji and up to Grafton.

The storm is expected to bring 2-inch hail, winds up to 75 mph, localized heavy rainfall and could produce a tornado. The storm is forecast to hit the region after 2 p.m., continuing until 2 a.m.
