Services set for area man killed in Wisconsin plane crash

Services are scheduled Monday morning in Baudette, Minn., for a former Baudette man and UND graduate who was killed in a Wisconsin plane crash Monday.

Services are scheduled Monday morning in Baudette, Minn., for a former Baudette man and UND graduate who was killed in a Wisconsin plane crash Monday.

Thomas Mitchell, 51, who most recently lived in West Fargo, N.D., was a retired military officer who once was stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base and who later served in the North Dakota National Guard.

Mitchell was was killed when his experimental plane crashed in a Wisconsin cornfield Monday, shortly after leaving the Sauk Prairie Airport.

Witnesses report seeing the aircraft flying north when a wing began to come apart, followed by the second wing breaking off at about 2 p.m.

Born in Dallas, Texas, Mitchell and his family later moved to California and then Baudette, where he graduated from high school. He graduated from UND in 1986.
