BISMARCK - Sen. Carolyn Nelson, D-Fargo, is hospitalized here after having emergency surgery Wednesday for internal bleeding.

She said Thursday she believes she'll be discharged today.

She was in the capital city for legislative meetings this week and "felt perfectly fine" until she began vomiting blood after lunch Wednesday.

After the first episode, Nelson drove to her hotel to lie down, but the vomiting recurred, so she went to a nearby walk-in clinic. The doctor there decided, after viewing an X-ray, that she should be hospitalized.

"They saw something they didn't like, so they put me in an ambulance and brought me here, and I've been here ever since," she said from her room at Medcenter One. "It was a scary 24 hours" until she was moved out of intensive care Thursday afternoon, she said.
