ST. PAUL -- A school bus driver fell asleep behind the wheel before he struck parked cars Monday and nearly hit a post office, St. Paul police believe.
Police sent Mohamed Mohamud Wasuge, 31, of St. Paul, a citation Wednesday for careless driving, a misdemeanor, said Steve Linders, a police spokesman. Based on witness statements, it appears he’d fallen asleep, Linders said.
“If that is what happened, then the bus company did the right thing in terminating the bus driver’s employment,” said Karen Klinzing, principal of West Side Summit charter school, of what the company told her.
There were 18 students in kindergarten to fifth grade on the bus when it crashed about 8:30 a.m. Monday at Minnehaha Avenue and Birmingham Street on the way to West Side Summit school. Paramedics took two students and an adult aide to the hospital for minor injuries after the crash, Klinzing said.
