The Grand Forks School Board announced Monday that applications will be accepted through Sept. 6 to fill a vacancy left by Dane Ferguson, who resigned as of July 31.

Ferguson's term expires next June.

School Board members will select Ferguson's replacement at its next regular meeting Sept. 11.

Residents will select a candidate to fill the regular four-year term at the June 12 School Board election.

Ferguson, who was elected to the School Board in 2014, served three years on the board. He and his family have moved to Mandan, N.D.

Ferguson was named executive director of the North Dakota Republican Party in January, and has been commuting between Bismarck and Grand Forks.

"My residency in Grand Forks ended in July," he told the Herald in a phone interview Monday.

He said he remains majority owner of a business he started, Ferguson Books and More in Grand Forks. But "I'm out of the day-to-day operations," which he said he's turned over to Robert Sutton, the minority owner and general manager.

Anyone interested in the open board position should go to the school district's website, www.gfschools.org , and complete an application. Applications also may be obtained at the school district office at 2400 47th Ave. S., or by calling 701-746-2436 to receive a copy by U.S. mail.

Applications will be accepted beginning Wednesday.

Membership on the School Board was "a hard thing to give up," Ferguson said. "I've enjoyed it."

Particularly gratifying, he said, was "seeing how governing has an impact on the children-for learning and children's success."

He and his wife, Elizabeth, who taught in Grand Forks and Crookston elementary schools, have three sons, ages 7, 5 and 3.
