BISMARCK - A former Grand Forks political activist who ran for sheriff in Morton County in the 2006 primary election has been charged with felony theft in neighboring Burleigh County.
Eugene Schneeweiss, 58, of Hebron, N.D., is accused of exchanging two empty nail gun boxes with two boxes containing nail guns at the Bismarck Menards store.
Police Lt. Dan Donlin said Schneeweiss asked store staff if he could compare the nail guns he had to the nail guns the store carried. Staff later saw him exchanging the boxes over surveillance video, Donlin said.
Schneeweiss could face up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines if convicted. He has not yet entered a plea.
Schneeweiss drew only 5 percent of the vote in the primary in June and was eliminated from the sheriff's race.
