SARTELL, Minn. -- A sixth-grader from Sartell Middle School had fun representing Minnesota at the National Geographic Bee, but didn't make it past the preliminary round.

Twelve-year-old Gopi Ramanathan won the state competition in April.

The St. Cloud Times reports he got seven of nine questions right in the preliminary round Tuesday in Washington, but needed eight right answers to qualify for Wednesday's finals.

Teacher Lori Dornburg says she's proud of Gopi and wouldn't be surprised if he's back in Washington next year. Gopi is eligible to try again for the next two years.

Sartell Mayor Tim O'Driscoll last week proclaimed today Gopi Ramanathan Day in Sartell.
