PIERRE, S.D. -- South Dakota Attorney General Marty J. Jackley and Hanson County State's Attorney Jim Davies announced this afternoon the state's filing of a notice of intent to request the death penalty in the murder of Jasmine Guevara.
On Tuesday, the state filed its notice of intent to offer evidence of the following death-eligible aggravating circumstance: the offense was outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible, or inhuman in that it involved torture, depravity of mind, or an aggravated battery to the victim.
Based upon this allegedly aggravating factor, the state has filed notice of its intent to seek a jury recommendation of a sentence of death for the defendant, Alexander Salgado.
Salgado, 21, is facing three felony charges, including first-degree murder, in the November death of 16-year-old Guevara, of Mitchell. He and a 15-year-old juvenile identified by authorities only as M.D. were arrested for the murder. They are accused of killing Guevara, placing her in the trunk of a car in rural Hanson County near Mitchell and lighting the car on fire.
