The Red River Basin Commission will host public hearings next Monday in Roseau and Oslo, Minn., as part of a series of public forums to discuss its Long-Term Flood Solutions Project.

The purpose of the forums is to gather resident experiences, concerns and ideas to report to the North Dakota and Minnesota legislatures to promote future flood control actions.

Both forums will be Monday:

- Roseau: 2 to 4 p.m. at the Roseau Community Center.

- Oslo: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Oslo Community Center.

RRBC would like Red River valley residents who have stories and/or photos of their personal fight with the 2009 flood to submit them at the public meetings or e-mail them to floodf2009@redriverbasincommission.org .

"This is an opportunity to have your individual voices heard and contribute to the development of a basin-wide flood damage reduction strategy," RRBC Executive Director Lance Yohe said.

The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers will attend the meeting to listen to the stories and answer questions about their efforts in the Red River valley. The public forums will be used as cost-share with the Corps' Red River Basin Watershed Feasibility Study.

"There have been numerous studies related to flooding in the Red River Basin. What makes this different and exciting," Yohe said, "is that federal and state elected officials will use the project recommendations related to basinwide goals and strategies to address the continual flooding."

The RRBC has been working with local governments and watershed and water resource districts to develop an inventory of their immediate projects and long-term proposals to address flooding.

An engineering firm is assisting in the process to narrow the extensive options and help the RRBC develop the final comprehensive strategy to present to lawmakers and public officials throughout the basin.

The series of public forums began Monday in Hankinson, N.D.
