A Roseau, Minn. woman is seeking the Republican endorsement for the state Senate seat soon to be vacated by longtime lawmaker LeRoy Stumpf.

Sue Grafstrom, who works for LifeCare Medical Center "as a fundraiser and in grants management," announced her candidacy for District 1 in a press release Monday morning.

"The residents of this area need to be well-represented by hard-working and thoughtful individuals at the state Legislature who will fight to preserve and improve the quality of life for all who live and work in this exceptional place," she said in a statement, touting her "conservative values" and desire to promote rural priorities in St. Paul.

Stumpf, a Democrat who has been in the Legislature for more than three decades, announced last week he would retire after the upcoming legislative session. District 1 is made up of Minnesota's northwestern counties of Kittson, Marshall, Pennington, Polk, Roseau and Red Lake.

Grafstrom has been active in several community organizations, according to her press release, including as a board member of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, chairwoman of the Roseau Girls Hockey Booster Club and trustee of the Lake of the Woods Bible Camp Association. She has lived in Roseau for most of her life.
