The owner of adult stores in Grand Forks and Fargo called recent comments about its businesses and customers "inaccurate" and playing on "the stereotyping of adult bookstores."
"Romantix's customer base is broad and includes a large percentage of women and couples," the Denver-based company said in a press statement that compares its products and business as similar to Fantasy's, a Fargo adult store that plans to open in Grand Forks.
Fantasy's owners have contrasted their store with Romantix, saying theirs is more mainstream, in line with Victoria's Secret and Spencer Gifts. A Fantasy's employee recently told the Herald that Romantix in Fargo has "creepy" customers.
Romantix's statement, sent by the company's lawyer, Robert DePiano of Encinitas, Calif., was in response to Fantasy's claims.
"The Grand Forks Romantix store has worked in conjunction with the city for over 35 years, and was recently remodeled to add display windows for apparel, update an older sign and upgrade the exterior to conform with other retail stores," the statement said.

"Romantix complies with all code requirements and limits its patrons to adults," it said.
