Reproduction survey shows abundant young fish in N.D.

BISMARCK -- The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says its annual fall survey shows exceptional numbers statewide of young walleye, perch and northern pike.

BISMARCK -- The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says its annual fall survey shows exceptional numbers statewide of young walleye, perch and northern pike.

Fisheries management official Scott Gangl says the healthy populations are the result of both stocking efforts and good natural reproduction.

Game and Fish says rising water in Devils Lake helped produce the largest natural walleye hatch that fisheries crews have ever documented there.

The Missouri River from Garrison Dam to Lake Oahe also had what Gangl describes as "phenomenal" natural walleye reproduction.

Gangl says many smaller lakes around the state also had good numbers of young fish. He says flooding in much of North Dakota provided for excellent fish habitat.
