Keith Brian Donnell, 48, Red Lake, Minn., made his initial appearance Wednesday in federal court in Minneapolis on charges of possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime.

The indictment, filed last month, was unsealed Wednesday, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney in Minnesota, Todd Jones. It alleges Donnell had nearly 5 pounds of pot, as well as a firearm, when his home was searched April 14.

He hasn't entered a formal plea yet.

If convicted, he faces maximum sentence of life in prison on the firearms charge and five years on the pot possession charge.

His case resulted from an investigation by Red Lake Tribal Police, the Safe Trails and Paul Bunyan drug task forces, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
