FARGO – A recycling truck with the gate left up on its compactor struck a railroad overpass on 10th Street North early this morning, according to Fargo police.
The crash happened about 2:20 a.m., just north of Fourth Avenue North, sending the driver and passenger to a hospital, with injuries that were not severe, Lt. Joel Vettel said.
The compactor gate hit the overpass, causing the truck’s cab to be forced up into the underside of the overpass; the cab was crushed as a result. The truck belonged to Minnkota Recycling, Vettel said.
Until a BNSF inspection determined that the crash did not damage the bridge’s structural integrity, trains crossed the bridge at slow speeds. For about three hours, 10th Street and the adjacent sidewalks were blocked to traffic, Vettel said.
The identities of the driver and passenger were not released. No citations have been issued, but that remains a possibility, Vettel said.
