FARGO - The Red River at Fargo has a 20 percent chance of surpassing the record crest set in 2009 and a 50 percent chance of beating last year's crest, which was the sixth-highest on record, the National Weather Service said today in its latest spring flood outlook.

The Red has a 20 percent chance of reaching 41.2 feet and a 10 percent chance of reaching 42 feet in Fargo, the weather service said. The record crest of 40.84 feet was set in 2009.

There's a 50 percent chance the river will reach 37.4 feet, or nearly half a foot higher than last year's crest of 36.95 feet.

The probability of significant flooding on the Red River and its tributaries in North Dakota and Minnesota has increased because of wet soils before freeze-up, high river flows, above-normal snow-water equivalent in the southern Red River Valley and an expected cooler and wetter spring, the outlook states.
