The Choice Health and Fitness pool area is closed through Aug. 21 while workers clean the pool and reinstall ductwork that fell from the ceiling of the Grand Forks facility in mid-April.
Mike Orr, the facility's general manager, said an annual cleaning process usually closes the pool area during this time of the year for about a week for routine repair, acid washing the pool and other basic maintenance items. This year's gap in service is set to last an extra week, he said, while crews from Custom Aire reinstall fallen ductwork that unexpectedly crashed to the deck-apparently, Choice staff say, as a result of the corrosive effects of pool air.
Installation is set to cost nearly $90,000 to re-hang ductwork more securely, Orr said. The expense will be paid by insurance for the Grand Forks Park District. It's not clear how a related $3,000 cost to Bergstrom Electric to provide new wire hanging for pool area lighting will be funded.
