Former Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree during UND's spring commencement next month, the university announced today.
Pomeroy was nominated for the honor by Mark Jendrysik, chair of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, and School of Law Dean Kathryn Rand.
Pomeroy, a Valley City, N.D., native and UND alumnus, served as North Dakota's lone member of the U.S. House from 1992 until being defeated for a 10th term in office by Republican Rick Berg during the 2010 election.
The spring commencement ceremony will be held 1:30 p.m. May 14 in the Alerus Center, and will feature an address from Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D. In addition to receiving the honorary degree, Pomeroy will be the speaker at the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences commencement at 2:30 p.m. May 15 in the Chester Fritz Auditorium.
In his nomination letter, Jendrysik wrote that Pomeroy "is an outstanding example of commitment to public service and represents the values of leadership that we seek to teach in our students."

Rand called Pomeroy "one of our most notable alumni," adding that Pomeroy has been a "staunch supporter" of UND and the law school.
Pomeroy is a counsel in Alston & Bird's Washington, D.C., office, where he focuses on health care, regulatory and legislative issues.
