A car accident involving a propane truck injured a 74-year-old woman and shut down traffic Friday on South Washington Street in Grand Forks.

A Mutch Oil and Gas propane truck, driven by Thomas Presnell, 41, Grand Forks, was eastbound on 62nd Avenue South, and a Honda Accord, driven by Barbara Chisholm, Grand Forks, was northbound on Washington Street.

The truck didn’t stop at the Washington Street stop sign and collided with the Honda, according to a Grand Forks police report. The truck turned onto its side in the ditch and came to rest leaning against a power pole. The Honda remained upright in the ditch, according to police.

Chisholm was trapped in her car and was released by Grand Forks Fire Department before being taken to Altru Hospital with unknown injuries. Presnell did not appear to be injured from the crash.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

Traffic was blocked from the intersection until the power lines could be switched off and the propane truck was turned upright. Responders also took precautions to prevent spilled propane from igniting. Police have not released the amount of propane spilled.

Police diverted drivers in the area to Belmont Road and Columbia Road.

The crash is still under investigation. As of 3 p.m. Friday, no one was cited.

Altru Ambulance Service and the Grand Forks Sheriff’s Department assisted in the crash.
